About

Interim Rabbi
Temple B'nai Israel of Easton, MD (pictured above) brought me on as their 2024-25 Interim Rabbi, a new variation on a familiar role for both them and for me --- and it's been a great experience all around, Besides the obvious service-leading, teaching, and counseling, I've served as an in-house consultant, a bridge-builder, a holder of community, and a tour guide through new-to-them elements of Jewish life.

I've likened the role to being the congregational 'palate cleanser': honoring and savoring the 'taste' of what came before, while getting folks ready for the new sensation that awaits when the next only-dreamed-of course materializes. But further: while water alone can serve here, a more exciting separator is sorbet. Rather than the interim rabbi who just ably holds the space, I want to be the palate cleanser that 'pops'.

Serving a congregation as an Interim Rabbi is its own art form, and it's something that I both enjoy and am good at, in which I now have relevant experience. Significantly, interim'ing easily crosses denominations: even as the boundaries between movements increasingly blur, most elements of the Reconstructionist rabbinate are closely akin to those seen in both Reform and Conservative settings (and I personally have history and facility with every egalitarian branch of American Judaism).

I'm happy to brainstorm your community's needs with you, and also to furnish examples and stories (and recommendations!) from the good folks of Maryland's Eastern Shore. Part-time, and within reasonable driving (or train-bus) distance from DC, are the likeliest to pique my own interest --- but no matter the location or the scope of work, I look forward to being in touch.
