About Me

Spiritual leader: Rabbi Emeritus at Adat Shalom Reconstructionist Congregation in Bethesda, MD, where he started in 1995, served as Rabbi through 2024, and remains closely connected.   Interim Rabbi (24-25) at Temple B'nai Israel in Easton, MD (Reform).  High Holy Day Rabbi with the Jewish Community of Kauai, HI [24 and 25]

Eco-Religious leader:   Known widely for his teaching and writing on eco-Judaism and social justice, Fred is now Rabbinic Advisor to the Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life (COEJL), working alongside other Jewish and multi-faith partners on advocacy, education, and organizing.  The multi-faith element is so important to him that after ordination from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association, he received a Doctor of Ministry from Wesley Theological Seminary.

Volunteer leader:  A past chair of both Interfaith Power and Light (MD.DC.NoVA) and the Washington Board of Rabbis, Fred has served on numerous boards -- including the National Religious Partnership for the Environment, IPL national, JCRC of Greater Washington, Shalom Center, and more.   He has also been deeply involved in efforts to promote racial, gender, and LGBTQ+ equality, and progressive Israel education.

Human being:  Proud abba and spouse - avid biker (commuting not racing), lover of music, some-time juggler -- resident of DC (without voting representation in Congress, let's change that!) -- rabbi in MD, with OH & MI roots, and stops in MA & PA -- concerned citizen; teacher; friend.
